Florence's Forgotten 5500, 2018
- work in progress -
Over four million chickens and turkeys and more than 5500 pigs on factory farms were left behind to drown, confined in locked enclosures with no way to escape the floodwaters of Hurricane Florence. There was time to prepare for Florence after Hurricane Matthew in 2016 but farmers failed to act. The clean-up efforts which involve turning the millions of animal corpses into compost will cost taxpayers millions while the meat industry takes in hundreds of billions of dollars annually.
With no legal protections, farmed animals are particularly at risk during natural disasters, which are on the rise. In addition to the horrendous abuse and unimaginable suffering these intelligent creatures are forced to endure, it is well documented that the factory farming industry plays an enormous role in the progression of climate change, and has had, and continues to have a devastating impact on the planet.
